Clearwater's Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy
About Sifu Brian Spiegel
Sifu Brian Spiegel was born and raised in Brooklyn N.Y. At the age of fourteen, he began
studying karate and achieved his second-degree black belt. Like many of his friends in
the neighborhood, he spent much of his time trying his best to stay out of trouble. By the
time he was twenty years old, a large majority of his friends that he grew up with were
either in prison, dead, or trying to be a member of some organized crime family.
Realizing he needed a little direction and a way out of his neighborhood, he joined the
U.S. Army Reserve.
Upon completion of his training, he returned home and enrolled in Brooklyn College,
where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy. During his time in college and
beyond, Brian had met and was studying Wing Chun Kung Fu in Flatbush, Brooklyn under
the tutelage of one of the United States most prominent instructors, Grand Master Alan
Goldberg. Brian was Grand Master Goldberg's chief instructor for several years. After
twelve years of studying under Master Goldberg’s strict guidance, he was awarded his
instructor ranking (sifu) and given permission to teach Wing Chun Kung Fu. Brian moved
to Florida a few years later, where he became employed as a Deputy with the Pinellas
County Sheriff's office. Along with his position as a sheriff, he currently runs a Kung Fu
training academy in the city of Clearwater. He has recently co-authored a martial arts
book on the Wooden Dummy, which is expected to be published in 2008. He is
recognized as being the top ranked Sifu under Grand Master Alan Goldberg, and is
honored to be the only Sifu awarded the Wing Chun Bat Chum Do blades (Butterfly
Swords) from Master Alan Goldberg. Presently, Brian is passing on his Sifu's tradition by
teaching wing chun kung fu to a select handful of students.
What Makes Us Different?
Our academy is very unique when compared with the average martial arts school. The
academy consists of a small, devoted group of serious, dedicated students who have a
common connection; they all want to learn the martial art known as Wing Chun.
Since this martial arts academy is not commercial, we have limited space; therefore, all
students are initially on a three month probationary status. All students are expected to
take their study seriously, and attend classes regularly. As a result, the members of the
academy consider each other like “family members”.
‘Show me a fighter who is all heart and no skill against a fighter who is skilled and
also has heart and I’ll show you a badly beaten, bloody fighter with heart’.
At the academy, we pride ourselves in practicing a traditional martial art with a modern
look at self-offense. Many schools self-proclaim to teach you life and death skills by
using fear as an aid to generate student enrollment. These same schools often have no
validity in their combative backgrounds. They often provide their students with a false
sense of security and no true street survival skills. “Behold I send you out as sheep in the
midst of wolves” - Matthew 10:16
The academy has a rich, verifiable background which was passed down from first hand
experience and from past generations; therefore, we know what it takes to survive a
violent encounter. With our last three generations of instructors having documented
training in both private and government hand-to-hand combat, our training model has
been successfully battle-field tested. The academy focuses on both physical and
mental/psychological aspects, with a healthy dose of reality needed to survive a violent
encounter.
Our Process of Selecting Students
When an applicant contacts us, he or she will be called within one week. After a phone
interview, the applicant may be granted permission to sit in on a class. During the next
week, if the applicant is interested in becoming a student, he or she must contact the
academy to request a second visit. During this visit, the potential student must bring
comfortable training clothes so that he or she can participate in the class. Prior to the
person's commitment to attend the academy, we want to make sure that the atmosphere
matches the applicant's expectations. Sifu will contact the applicant during the next few
days to discuss probationary admittance into the academy.
